Chaplaincy at Christ The King

The Chaplaincy team at Christ the King supports the Catholic life of the school. Our mission is to contribute to the school’s life in faith by leading our community in prayer, worship and the Catholic mission of service (through raising money and awareness of charities). As well as this, our team plan, lead and evaluate collective worships in class, year groups, phases and in the whole school acts of worship. Chaplains are chosen by the children in each class to represent the school through regular meetings with collective worship leaders and specialists. The team also work in conjunction with other schools in our CMAT to live out the Gospel values, particularly Discipleship. Our Chaplains have a huge impact on the Catholic life of the school through their continued focus to improve the sense of community and to share the love of God.

Meet our Chaplains

Lucy Kearns

We are delighted to welcome Lucy Kearns, our new School Chaplain, to the Christ the King community. Lucy has already made a wonderful start to her ministry with us, leading mini‑retreats for our Reception children this week and supporting them in growing closer to Jesus through simple prayer and reflection.

She has also planned Evening Prayer with our Year 3 pupils in preparation for our sleepover at the end of March and has set up a lunchtime Prayer Club, giving children a quiet, welcoming space to pray and spend time with God.

We are very grateful for Lucy’s joyful presence and the spiritual guidance she is already bringing to our school.

Chaplaincy Mini-Retreats

Lucy Kearns, our Trust Chaplain, leads our mini retreats across the school. Each class has time to share prayer, reflection and worship. The themes change according to the Liturgical Year and are a beautiful ‘pause’ in the busy school day.

Chaplaincy Activities across our school

Chaplaincy Retreat Day

On Monday 6th October 2025 the Junior Chaplaincy team enjoyed a wonderful day with our Lead Lay Chaplain Tom Shannon and Miss Lawes at St Patrick’s Catholic Church. They spent time getting to know one another and developing their teamwork skills. The children also made new friends from Bishop Ellis Catholic Primary School in Thurmaston and St Francis Catholic Primary School in Melton Mowbray.

Harvest Celebration of the Word

Our new chaplaincy teams led their first Celebration of the word today to celebrate Harvest. They were wonderful, joyous occasions and gave us an opportunity to thank God for all that we have. Thank you to all those who joined us and to Mrs Valente and Miss Lawes for supporting and training our incredible children.

Thank you also for all your donations for Braunstone Foodshare.  We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our school community and it is wonderful that we can share the harvest with our  brothers and sisters in the local community.

Remembrance Celebration of the Word

On Wednesday 12th November, we marked Remembrance Day. A huge thank you to our school Chaplains who planned and delivered our celebration of the word with confidence and reverence.

We learned about Armistice Day and how important it is to remember the past. We prayed for those who lost their lives and held a two-minute silence.

Advent Celebration of the Word

Thank you to our Infant school chaplains, and children from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, who led a beautiful Celebration of the Word this morning to begin our season of Advent. It was a wonderful way to start the season of Advent. We were reminded of the real reason of Christmas and how Advent is a time of waiting and preparing our hearts for Jesus to come into our world.

Thank you to our junior school chaplains who led a beautiful celebration of the word this week to begin our season of Advent.  It was lovely to hear all the class Advent promises.

Christingle Celebration of the Word

We always look forward to the Christingle celebration on the last day of the Advent term. A huge thank you to our Year 2 children, and the Junior Chaplains children and the adults who worked with them to plan and lead such a prayerful service.  It was a beautiful candlelit celebration and a perfect way to end the term in preparation for Christmas.

The Feast of St Thomas Aquinas

This week, we celebrated the Feast Day of St Thomas Aquinas which brought all of the 23 schools in our Trust together!

This started with an assembly on virtues and vices. The children learned about the 7 Catholic Virtues and how important they are to practise everyday so they can be successful at CTK and in their young Christian lives. Please talk to your children and ask them to tell you the 7 Catholic Virtues!

Representatives from all 23 schools, including 9 chaplains from Christ the King, gathered at English Martyrs’ in Leicester for Mass. We worked together in our school groups to think out how we can continue its legacy by becoming missionaries of hope in our daily lives.

Together, we reflected on how we can bring hope to others at home, at school and within our wider communities.  It was a wonderful occasion!

Lent at CTK

This week we turn our attention to the start of Lent.  Our school chaplains prepared and led our Lent Celebrations of the Word.  They reminded us of the ways we can grow closer to God during this season through prayer, fasting and giving to charity.

Our school will be fundraising for Mary’s Meals during Lent. Each class will be organising their own fundraising event next half term as part of our almsgiving.  All of the money from these fundraising activities will go to support the work of Mary’s Meals who provide life‑changing daily school meals to children living in some of the world’s poorest communities. It would be wonderful if you could support us this Lent.

Year 3 will be having a sponsored sleepover in our school hall to raise money for Lent. Further details will be sent to all families after half term via Arbor.

Prayer stations on the theme of forgiveness.

As part of our Lenten observance, our School Chaplains prepared and led a series of  reflective prayer stations on the theme of forgiveness for children from Reception to Year 3.

Resurrection Celebration of the Word

Our Infant and Junior Chaplains prepared and led our Resurrection Celebration of the Word today. They reminded us that the Resurrection brings hope, new life and joy, and encourages us to live as Jesus taught us. A special thank you also to Miss Lawes and Mrs Valente for supporting the children as they prepared for and led our worship.
